For a couple of days, at least, I went Eurovision-crazy last week. Read my story for the Saturday Age and SMH online here. I spoke to several people who attend or host Eurovision parties and, having never entered this world before, I’m seriously considering throwing my own diverse knees-up.
Besides all the costumes, voting intrigue and national cuisines to think about there’s also the drinking games, such as a shot for every key-change. For a full run-down of those have a look at this article from Crikey.
But one of the highlights for me was watching this clip from Ireland’s puppet entry, Dustin the Turkey, in 2008. Strapped for cash at the time the Emerald Isle may have been spooked by the prospect of winning (again, they’re the record-holder with seven wins) and therefore incurring the costly hosting duties the following year. Needless to say, Dustin was a turkey in all respects.

The first Eurovision semi-final will be screened on SBS One on Friday, May 9, 8.30pm; the second semi-final is on Saturday, May 10, 8.30pm; and the grand final is on Sunday, May 11, 7.30pm. The Eurovision Quiz Contest will screen on SBS Two on Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 9, at 8pm.
