Royal Auto cover – Who will save the Great Ocean Road?

My story about tourism, development and the natural environment on the Great Ocean Road came out in RACV’s RoyalAuto magazine earlier this month. It has beautiful photographs by Oliver Munoz (see above) and looks at the latest attempts by the State Government to create a single authority to cope with complicated planning and jurisdiction issues.

In many ways – and like so may other top tourist attractions around the world – the road and surrounding landscape is a victim of its own success. We market the experience overseas and interstate, which is great for tourism jobs, but what if too many people come and not enough has been done to manage the numbers?

It’s a complex issue but something that needs to be resolved. I got the sense that a toll on that road is inevitable one day, but I could be wrong. I don’t think that would be such a bad idea. What do you think?
